Ring of Fortune. Day 1
2020.03.07
Another year, another dog sled race in the village of Verkhoshizhemye, Kirov Region. The Ring of Fortune is more than a competition — it’s a celebration of motion, emotion, and the timeless connection between mushers and their dogs. For photographers, it’s also an unmissable opportunity to sharpen their skills in dynamic shooting and storytelling through expressive canine faces.
The event stands out for two key reasons:
- Dynamic shooting practice — Whether you’re firing off high-speed bursts or waiting patiently for a single action shot, the track becomes a perfect playground for testing your gear and instincts.
- Emotional expression — The dogs and mushers put on a living theater of fleeting, honest emotions. Joy, focus, struggle, confidence — all pass by in seconds, waiting to be captured.
Thanks to Vera Sinitsyna and her team of helpers and sponsors, the race is brilliantly organized, with a festive vibe for both spectators and competitors from all over the country. Handmade prizes, warm hospitality, and a strong community spirit make it memorable.
Like a bottle of fine wine, The Ring of Fortune ends too quickly — but leaves a long, rich aftertaste with subtle notes of adventure.
Photography Tips:
This race has its quirks and challenges for photographers:
- The wide, hilly track with smooth curves offers great action, but long focal lengths (200mm and more) are a must. Otherwise, you’re limited to wide or cropped shots — and stepping onto the track is risky and frowned upon.
- The night lighting system is a unique feature that enables night shots but creates distracting poles in bokeh.
In short: don’t improvise. Scout in advance. I had just one evening to walk the area, map out a GPS track, and mark the best photo spots. Planning your movement between them is essential. If you’re visiting for the first time and want solid shots — arrive a few days early.
Come visit. This place will test your limits — and it will definitely teach you something new. 🤟
